February 17th, 2011 General Meeting U of M Dearborn - Environmental Interpretive Center, Dearborn, MI After a great discussion on the business model of sustainability in our January meeting, in February we focused on the impact sustainability has on operations. Renae Hesselink, Vice President of Sustainability at Nichols & SustainAble Solutions, will speak on Nichols' journey to LEED, the achievement of more than a 90% reduction in waste, 34% reduction in energy usage which also achieved them an Energy Star rating, the value of commissioning and the challenges that went along with all of those achievements. March 17th, 2011 Meeting Minutes U of M Dearborn - Environmental Interpretive Center, Dearborn, MI The March SMSBF meeting will focus on Land Use and Sustainability. Andrea Brown, Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP), along with co-presenter Chip Smith, Project Manager from Wade Trip, will discuss the Michigan Development Impact Study (MI DIS) project, an initiative that seeks to develop new ways to consider large scale development review projects in Michigan, and recommendations to attract development to the state. The result is coordinated and expedited development reviews, involved affected and impacted stakeholders, and provision of incentives for coordinated planning. April 28th, 2011 Meeting Minutes U of M Dearborn - Environmental Interpretive Center, Dearborn, MI The April SMSBF meeting focused on Burning Rivers – Revival of Four Urban-Industrial Rivers that Caught on Fire. Dr. John Hartig, Refuge Manager, Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, discussed the book, Burning Rivers, on the history of four urban-industrial rivers in the Great Lakes Basin that caught on fire because of oil pollution. The book presents insights on the environmental history, translates the science, provides practical lessons learned in river stewardship, and inspires good stewardship. May 19, 2011 Meeting Minutes U of M Dearborn - Room 119 - Environmental Interpretive Center, Dearborn, MI The May SMSBF meeting discussed the various sustainability reporting protocols and present a case study on how a global manufacturer developed and implemented a sustainability reporting program from the ground up. Michele will identify drivers and pitfalls of these reporting programs along with some best practices to help any type of business implementing sustainability programs. June 16, 2011 Meeting Minutes U of M Dearborn - Room 119 - Environmental Interpretive Center, Dearborn, MI The June SMSBF meeting discussed the paint waste that goes into landfills every year. According to the EPA, 69 million gallons of paint waste goes into US Landfills, and some states are beginning to take action through extended producer responsibility legislation. Epaintrecycling, LLC is Michigan’s first successful latex paint recycling model to keep our #1 liquid household waste out of the landfills.  Please see attached flyer.
July 21, 2011 Meeting Minutes Planterra, Corp. The July SMSBF meeting discussed the relationship between plants and indoor air quality, as well as the energy-efficient design of Planterra's beautiful conservatory. Reclaimed & Recycled Wood, Recycled Rainwater, Natural and Recycled Materials and Natural Habitat Restoration were utilized during the planning and construction of the conservatory.  Solar energy provides heat and light to the conservatory, and the physical orientation of the structure allows for cooler temperatures during summer and preserves heat during cold winter months. Presentation includes a tour of the conservatory. Please see attached flyer .
August 18, 2011 Meeting Minutes NSF International, Ann Arbor, MI The August SMSBF meeting discussed why sustainability in the banking industry is one of the driving forces for accountability for stakeholders and stockholders. Please see attached flyer .
September 15, 2011 Meeting Minutes Lawrence Technological University, Southfield, MI The September SMSBF meeting discussed on the challenges of encouraging adoption of eco-friendly behaviors, products and messages. The presentation focused on the importance of grounding environmental products and messages in the core needs of the consumer, and utilized real-world examples of successful and less-than-successful efforts at marketing eco-friendly products and services.
